I hated the Titanic movie. Despised it. On account of all kinds of reasons. The pettiness of the interpersonal relationships. Probably blaming the script more than anything else. I could not suspend disbelief in the story line with a premise that with knowledge that the ship was sinking in ice water, people were running around trying to avenge romantic betrayals. As someone who has spent a lot of hours on warmer water, believing in a plot like that was swimming against the current in credibility. Killing to get a life boat seat would be much more credible than killing some one messing around with my girl friend or bride or whatever it was. Everyone was going to die badly anyway, and soon. I left in the middle and went next door for a beer.

Dag Hammarskjöld, Markings
In the point of rest at the center or our being. we encounter a world where all things are at rest in the same way, Then a tree becomes a mystery, a cloud a revelation, each man a cosmos of whose riches we can only catch glimpses. The life of simplicity is simple, but it opens to us a book in which we never get beyond the first syllable.

Unasked Questions

My reaction surprised me: instead of regretting the loss of two or three valued crew, I thought 'how nice to be able to do that'. How nice to be able to pick up and go to be nearer your children and your grand children. I found myself asking, would I like to do that. Could I do that? How could I do that?

The Valley of the Shadow
Forrest Church: Notes & Quotes
Yes, yes, the above graphic is taken (shamelessly) from the cover of the late Forrest Church's Love & Death: My Journey through the Valley of the Shadow. I'll have more to say soon.
