Dag Hammarskjöld
Dag Hammarskjöld,
MarkingsIn the point of rest at the center or our being. we encounter a world where all things are at rest in the same way, Then a tree becomes a mystery, a cloud a revelation, each man a cosmos of whose riches we can only catch glimpses. The life of simplicity is simple, but it opens to us a book in which we never get beyond the first syllable.
Morning Pages
I'm not about to get into Julia Cameron's Morning Pages. She's recommending to her readers and demanding of her students that they spend the day's first cup of coffee and thirty minutes writing three 8x11 pages freehand of whatever thoughts come to them.
For one thing, I hate my handwriting. That's probably a main reason I got so deeply into computer technology in the first place. For another thing, during my first cup of coffee my greatest urgency is getting out of the house early. If I don't give my employer the best and earliest hours of my day, I will end up dozing off at my desk around noon. I cannot afford to be caught with my eyes closed and slack-jawed.
Once I become retired, voluntarily or involuntarily, I will happily institute morning pages, because I believe in Cameron's rationale for them. But even then, I will be pressing keys, not pushing pens.
I had always wanted to be a writer, of some nature, but I despised writing in longhand. I spent years feeling inadequate because what other great writers seemed to love just would not float not boat. When I started using a computer, only three years ago, I finally sat down and started writing and have hardly stopped since. The immediacy of it, the ability to capture my thoughts quickly as they flow through is essential, paramount. Despite the problems that seem to be inherent in this technology I will be forever grateful.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not very good at taking directions. I pretty much use my morning time to write now, whatever I feel led to write, and always with a cup of coffee. I do like what she had to say in one of your earlier posts - some very valid and helpful points.
Yes Teresa, I think Cameron gets a lot of stuff right and it works for me.
