Dag Hammarskjöld, Markings
In the point of rest at the center or our being. we encounter a world where all things are at rest in the same way, Then a tree becomes a mystery, a cloud a revelation, each man a cosmos of whose riches we can only catch glimpses. The life of simplicity is simple, but it opens to us a book in which we never get beyond the first syllable.

A Costly Decision Looms

This is morning, off my front porch when Ballou and I open the door and go down to the street to fetch the day's papers. Every morning it's different. Occasionally I can hear the surf and the seals. Whenever we have a marine layer, I certainly hear the fog horn from the end of the breakwater.

As near as I can orient myself after a dozen years living here, this is facing south across 'my lake' at the Channel Islands. The big island is Santa Cruz, and the low island to the left, more visible to the naked eye than to my camera's lens this morning, is Anacapa. I have sailed between the two
half dozen times on the King Harbor Race (to Redondo Beach). Between the two islands and the beach are the waters I have raced on more than 40 times a year.

Off to the left in the east, through those hefty trees is where sun comes up over East Beach and Fools; Anchorage.

For reasons of aging and declining health, do I feel obligated to move from this priceless vantage point and downsize further than what it took for me to get here in the first place? That is the question. It would be like moving from where my glass is half full to where it is half empty.

  1. Here, let me top you off. I'll come cut your grass for you, and anything else it takes for you to stay in that heavenly place.

  2. Thanks for the lovely offer, Baydog. First let me do my part which is to contract out the remodeling of a garage into an elder care/honeymoon suite with fully accessible showers & such. Then you can lend a hand on the mower when I get too lazy for that!

  3. Do I get a vote? In the immortal words of Maurice Williams, "Oh won't you stay just a little bit longer/please please stay..."
