Dag Hammarskjöld
Dag Hammarskjöld,
MarkingsIn the point of rest at the center or our being. we encounter a world where all things are at rest in the same way, Then a tree becomes a mystery, a cloud a revelation, each man a cosmos of whose riches we can only catch glimpses. The life of simplicity is simple, but it opens to us a book in which we never get beyond the first syllable.
Jerry Sandusky Walks his 3rd Mile
At the outset of this, I have to disclose that I am not a fan of professional (NFL) or semi-professional (NCAA) football. At best, I am uninformed about football (of the pointy-shaped ball) and indifferent as to its fortunes. To wit: until this week, I would not have been able to associate the name of Joe Paterno with any industry or profession. As blissful ignorance sometime is, it has been crushed by the tsunami coming out of Penn State. But, as Pennsylvania Sate Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said last week,
This is not a case about football. It's a case about children who have had their innocence stolen from them and the culture that did nothing to stop it.
Jerry Sandusky has 40 charges against him, is currently out on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court next month for a preliminary hearing. Sandusky stands accused of aggravated sexual abuse of minors under his tutelage in The Second Mile.
In the media, he has been tried and convicted. Everyone expects his "Third Mile" will be a slo-mo trip from Penn State to the State Pen. There he will find a lot of men who will want to 'crack his back'.
But before that Sandusky's case will drag on. It will be very hard and difficult to get one young man to testify in open or closed court. But the stakes are so high that one courageous victim will eventually come forward, and then maybe another and another. It will be very hard on them. But howsoever long it takes, inevitably the law will run its course to a slam-dunk conviction. Assistant football coach Mike McQueary's eye-witness testimony ensures the verdict.
The only open question is how many other people will be hurt as Sandusky walks his 3rd mile. If this monster had half a heart, he would at least think of members of his own family which include six adopted sons. There's only one and best way Jerry can really say he's sorry.
Wherever he is, he should be taken off of suicide watch.
It's just that Sandusky has this self image of himself as a member of the Lord's Resistance Army in the Congo....
ReplyDeleteMatthew 5:41:
ReplyDelete"And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two."
But thee should not compel him to go a third mile.
Very sad about all of this!
ReplyDeleteMe too. But wouldn't that be the easy way out? Suicide is another very terrible thing. It's inconceivable to me where they go exactly from here. Again, very sad
ReplyDeleteIt looks like Jerry-boy is going to try to get as many kids to testify in his behalf as he can. My bet is, if he doesn't man-up and off himself, some kid's dad will whack him before his day is done.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Joe Paterno is concerned, he had a chance to retire, gracefully and honorably, earlier in 2007. But he was too stuborn and big to fail. His hanging on exceeded his grip and grasp. He, too, followed the Mo Gadhafi Syndrome.
My bet is the defense plan is to nail jury selection and go for an OJ Simpson redux!
